What isGST – Goods and
Services Tax?

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is an indirect tax in India, implemented on July 1, 2017. It replaced multiple prior taxes like VAT, excise duty, and service tax. GST is destination-based and collected at each stage of production and distribution, ultimately borne by the end consumer. There are four types of GST — CGST, SGST, IGST, and UTGST — each applicable based on the nature and origin of the transaction.

GST CalculationFormula

The GST amount is calculated using the following standard formula:

GST Amount = (Amount × Rate) ÷ 100
Total Price = Amount + GST Amount

For inclusive amounts (reverse calculation):

  • Pre-GST Price: Total Amount × 100 ÷ (100 + Rate)
  • GST Amount: Total Amount − Pre-GST Price

Example

GST Exclusive Calculation

  • Item: Furniture worth ₹1,000
  • GST Rate: 18%

GST Amount = ₹1,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = ₹180

Total Price = ₹1,000 + ₹180 = ₹1,180

GST Inclusive Calculation

  • Total Price (inclusive): ₹1,180
  • GST Rate: 18%

Pre-GST = ₹1,180 × 100 ÷ 118 = ₹1,000

GST Amount = ₹1,180 − ₹1,000 = ₹180

A ₹500 cake at 18% GST yields ₹90 tax, totalling ₹590 for the end consumer.

UnderstandingTypes of
GST in India

GST is structured into four types based on the nature and origin of the transaction. Understanding which type applies helps you accurately compute your tax liability and maintain compliance.

CGST

Central Goods and Services Tax

Levied by the central government on intra-state supply of goods and services. CGST is collected alongside SGST for all transactions occurring within the same state.

SGST

State Goods and Services Tax

Levied by state governments on intra-state supply. Collected simultaneously with CGST, the revenue goes directly to the respective state government.

IGST

Integrated Goods and Services Tax

Levied by the central government on inter-state supply and international transactions. IGST replaces both CGST and SGST for cross-border trade.

UTGST

Union Territory GST

Applied in Union Territories such as Chandigarh and Lakshadweep in place of SGST. Collected alongside CGST for intra-UT transactions.
